MAD Magazine cartoonist/caricaturist Tom Richmond has an awesome tutorial on his site about his working methods for getting his line art into finished color works of art.
Be sure to check out his “Diary of a MAD Job” as well. The rest of the entries, all the way to part 6, are kinda all over the place in between other entries - Tom’s full posts are on the main blog entry pages, which makes it kinda hard to navigate. Worth doing so, however.
