“On Cartooning” by Gaping Void cartoonist Hugh MacLeod

Cartoonist MacLeod has an honest and revealing post, On Cartooning which should be of interest to fellow cartoonists out there. Thought I would pass it along.

MacLeod has an interesting gimmick — his cartoons are all drawn on blank business cards. It’s a neat hook.

The cartoons are also unique, falling somewhere between slapstick surrealism and existential poetry. His style ranges from open, minimalist characters to Mondrian-meets-Kansinsky ballpoint doodles. Not all of them will “click” for you, but when one does it’s usually spot-on.

There’s a tantalizing post where he mentions:

16. One of the smartest things I ever did was figure out that making money indirectly off the cartoons was far easier than trying to make the money directly. If I could teach gapingvoid readers just one thing, that would be it.
