This Animator’s Survival Kit DVD set from Oscar-winning animator Richard Willams looks like a great resource for those animators out there. Personally, I do not have the patience for animation, but it’s fascinating to me.
This DVD set is a companion to Williams’ highly-rated Animator’s Survival Kit book. The site doesn’t seem to indicate if the book is included with the DVD set, but it seems not to be.
Richard Williams was awarded two Oscars for the animation on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit“. He directed and designed Roger Rabbit, Jessica Rabbit, Baby Herman and all the new characters for the Walt Disney/Steven Spielberg production.
The set isn’t cheap at £634.04 (or about $1,252.42 for us U.S. folks as of the date of this post).

OK, so I am a bit jealous that I didn’t come up with the idea of turning famous dead presidents into cartoon zombies! OK OK, I’m really jealous that I didn’t come up with the idea of cartoon zombie presidents.
How cool are these? Drawn in a very 1950’s EC horror comic/Jack Davis-esque style, featuring Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. And to make sure they offended the religious folk out there, you have Zombie Pope and Zombie Jesus as well.

Cartoonist MacLeod has an honest and revealing post, On Cartooning which should be of interest to fellow cartoonists out there. Thought I would pass it along.
MacLeod has an interesting gimmick – his cartoons are all drawn on blank business cards. It’s a neat hook.
The cartoons are also unique, falling somewhere between slapstick surrealism and existential poetry. His style ranges from open, minimalist characters to Mondrian-meets-Kansinsky ballpoint doodles. Not all of them will “click” for you, but when one does it’s usually spot-on.

Illustrator extraordinaire Von Glitschka has a very cool podcast out that I just started listening to, The Illustrative Designer podcast. Each podcast is basically an interview by “the Vonster” (as he calls himself) with a chosen professional illustrator, cartoonist or designer. The most recent illustrator interview was with (the unimaginably prolific) cartoon illustrator & designer Bob Staake.
The “illustrative designer” moniker comes from Von’s idea that when asked to describe his work, he says he’s not a graphic designer that can draw, but rather an illustrator who can design. Hence, “illustrative designer”.

If you aren’t familiar with cartoonist Tom Richmond, make yourself familiar. This guy’s work is absolutely amazing. Very much in the style of Mort Drucker from MAD Magazine – only taken to the extreme. Not only is his cartooning & caricature style excellent, but his color work is also phenomenal. Tom graciously has taken the time to outline exactly how he digitally colors his artwork in Photoshop in a juicily-detailed three-post tutorial/how-to series on his cartooning blog.

I just discovered these free PDF downloads of Inkspot, the Australian Cartoonists’ Association’s official magazine. The current issue feature über-caricaturist Mort Drucker. The publication is about 24 pages and contain interviews and news. I haven’t delved into the complete issue just yet, but looks to be a great resource.
Lots of interviews with cartoonists and other informative cartooning and cartoon industry resources in each issue.

Color matching wizards Pantone have been bought out by color management gizmo maker X-Rite (yeah, I never heard of them either). Seems they have been collaborating for some time now, with the Pantone Huey being one of their joint efforts. The Huey is a pretty cool, essential and affordable tool, so perhaps this is a good sign of things to come (see my review of the Pantone Huey monitor calibration tool).
Pantone swatch books are essential tools for any artist/designer working with color, but it’s good to see that the hardware side will no doubt be more aggressively pursued by this merger, since the new owners are hardware based. Such a huge part of the work of many artists and designers create these days is done on the computer monitor, and proper calibration for predictable print output is essential.

Just stumbled across this awesome Flickr set of cartoon woodcarved panels by ojimbo. Each letter of the alphabet (sadly, only up to N right now) has it’s own panel with excellent juxtapositions of objects that begin with each letter. I totally want these as trading cards. Pictured is A is for Afro.
The best pieces have combos and triple combos, like the “Masked Mermaid with Mohawk” in the letter M.

Cool plastic toy art made from recombined plastic toys by artist Sang Won Sung, a Korean artist living in Brazil. The website is in Flash, and there’s not much info, mostly just images in the Portfolio section. The bugs are especially cool, and there are some other toy designs of funky cartoon type characters (including some superheroes) as well.

Creative Binge is a new online portfolio & social networking site for artists, illustrators, designers and all you other creative types. The talk of social networking for the community site sounds like a great idea.
The website has a clean and classy design and interface, and a very easy to use upload feature for adding your artwork to the free portfolio with your account.
