Derren Brown: Caricatures

I am a big fan of illusionist Derren Brown. For those not in the know, he’s a magician / mentalist in the UK with a pretty big following over there. His television series Mind Control has aired in the U.S. on the Sci-Fi Channel.

Derren’s main celebrity is based on his television and stage performances which revolve around a blend of magic, hypnotism and mentalism (or NLP). His shows are very interactive with the audience and great fun. Brown is a bit of a smart-ass and doesn’t take himself too seriously, which I think adds to his appeal.

Brown also likes to do James Randi style exposés on psychics, faith healers and the like (his UK Channel 4 special “Messiah” is amazing). It’s very interesting to me to see how he is able to replicate these so-called paranormal effects using his blend of psychology, misdirection, NLP, hypnosis and other techniques.

But did you know he was a talented caricature artist as well?

Commander In Beef

Cartoon illustration of Obama & McCain fighting over a meatball on dinner plate.

A recent Obama & McCain humorous cartoon illustration I created for Time Out NY for the “Commander In Beef” article regarding what New York City chefs would prepare for the 2008 presidential candidates. The illustration was created for the dining section, and is currently being featured on the front page of the Time Out NY website’s dining section. The featured artwork is a spot illustration companion piece to the full page illustration I created for the print article:

Zombie Presidents!

Zombie Lincoln - Cartoon illustration of President Abraham Lincoln as a zombie.OK, so I am a bit jealous that I didn’t come up with the idea of turning famous dead presidents into cartoon zombies! OK OK, I’m really jealous that I didn’t come up with the idea of cartoon zombie presidents.

How cool are these? Drawn in a very 1950’s EC horror comic/Jack Davis-esque style, featuring Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. And to make sure they offended the religious folk out there, you have Zombie Pope and Zombie Jesus as well.

Digital Coloring Tutorials by MAD Magazine cartoonist Tom Richmond

MAD Magazine cartoonist Tom Richmond digital coloring tutorial screenshotIf you aren’t familiar with cartoonist Tom Richmond, make yourself familiar. This guy’s work is absolutely amazing. Very much in the style of Mort Drucker from MAD Magazine — only taken to the extreme. Not only is his cartooning & caricature style excellent, but his color work is also phenomenal. Tom graciously has taken the time to outline exactly how he digitally colors his artwork in Photoshop in a juicily-detailed three-post tutorial/how-to series on his cartooning blog.

Inkspot: Free PDF Magazine Downloads from the Australian Cartoonists’ Association

Inkspot cartoonist magazine cover artI just discovered these free PDF downloads of Inkspot, the Australian Cartoonists’ Association’s official magazine. The current issue feature über-caricaturist Mort Drucker. The publication is about 24 pages and contain interviews and news. I haven’t delved into the complete issue just yet, but looks to be a great resource.

Lots of interviews with cartoonists and other informative cartooning and cartoon industry resources in each issue.

Cleveland Clinic Medical Mart Star Wars Parody – Cleveland Free Times August 15, 2007 Issue

Mart Wars - Star Wars themed parody on the Medical Mart controversy in Cleveland OhioI (very) recently worked on a two-page spread illustration for the Cleveland Free Times issue that comes out this week (Wed. Aug. 15, 2007). The piece was a satire on the controversial Cleveland Clinic “Medical Mart” being proposed in Cleveland, Ohio.

Writer James Renner found my work via my website and wanted me to illustrate his Star Wars themed parody of the shenanigans. The piece was done in a cartoon style (obviously) reminiscent of MAD Magazine, as I was flexing some serious Mort Drucker, Sam Viviano & Jack Davis idolisation while creating the piece.

Staff writer Renner, along with Editor Frank Lewis were extremely pleased with the final piece, which was created on a super-tight deadline (even after being given a requested week’s bump by Art Director Ron Kretsch due to many existing and pressing projects on my end).

Rejected CafePress shirts

I guess these concepts/designs violated some sort of copyright thing.

The first, one of my corny pun t-shirt ideas, Fat Albert Einstein.

The design, with of course, “Hey Hey Hey! E=mc2“:

Next up, my Nike parody. Aren’t parodies covered under copyright law? I’m sure CafePress “reserves the right” blah blah blah…

For us lazy cynics out there, a proper alternative to the “Just Do It” slogan – “The Hell With It.”
