Wacky Packages: The Book

Wacky Packages book imageWho doesn’t remember those Wacky Packages collectible trading cards of cartoon product parodies growing up as a kid in the ’70’s? Well, I guess people that didn’t grow up in the ’70’s…

Anyways, there seems to be a new Wacky Packages 35th anniversary retrospective book available now (even though Amazon’s release date reads June 1, 2008…).

Alien Abduction UFO Lamp

Alien Abduction UFO lamp

Although not yet even an actual product, the Alien Abduction UFO lamp is quite possibly the coolest lamp of all time, at least for geeks.

Artist Lasse Klein created the concept art for the UFO lamp with computer graphics software.

The artist mentions on her website/blog that the more people who sign up for the flying saucer lamp mailing list, the more likely she will be able to turn this into an actual product.

Zen Doodle Sharing: Sketch Swap

Doodle sharing website SketchSwap.com screenshotA completely fun, pointless and very Zen website I just stumbled across: Sketch Swap. The premise is simple — make a doodle, submit it, and get a random doodle in return. There’s no eraser, only one pencil size and no color. You can’t save, link to or find your doodle once you submit it. You can’t sign up, log in, create an account, comment or vote.

In short, it’s perfect.

The Histogram As The Image

New York City skyline in HistogramYou’d probably think I was crazy if I told you this image contained the New York City skyline, but it does. You have to be a bit of a Photoshop geek to see it, but it’s there.

Head on over to Ironic Sans to see the skyline, and how it was done. It took me a couple of reads to wrap my head around this. I love this kind of stuff!

General Mills Monster Cereal Character Figurines

Generla Mills monster ceral figure packagingWho didn’t love the General Mills Monster Cereals growing up — Count Chocula, FrankenBerry and my favorite, Boo Berry.

I just stumbled across these excellent Kubrick figurines of all the main monsters.

Doing a bit of research, it turns out there were two more later additions to the lineup. Do you know them? First was the Wolfman-themed Fruit Brute, which was re-issued as Yummy Mummy. I guess neither did very well on the grocery store shelves.

I was totally hooked on these as a kid, being a huge monster fan. Have not eaten them for many years as I really don’t eat sugar-coated cereal much anymore.

And just as cool as the figurines are the excellent mini cereal box blister packs.

Zombie Presidents!

Zombie Lincoln - Cartoon illustration of President Abraham Lincoln as a zombie.OK, so I am a bit jealous that I didn’t come up with the idea of turning famous dead presidents into cartoon zombies! OK OK, I’m really jealous that I didn’t come up with the idea of cartoon zombie presidents.

How cool are these? Drawn in a very 1950’s EC horror comic/Jack Davis-esque style, featuring Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. And to make sure they offended the religious folk out there, you have Zombie Pope and Zombie Jesus as well.

Inkspot: Free PDF Magazine Downloads from the Australian Cartoonists’ Association

Inkspot cartoonist magazine cover artI just discovered these free PDF downloads of Inkspot, the Australian Cartoonists’ Association’s official magazine. The current issue feature über-caricaturist Mort Drucker. The publication is about 24 pages and contain interviews and news. I haven’t delved into the complete issue just yet, but looks to be a great resource.

Lots of interviews with cartoonists and other informative cartooning and cartoon industry resources in each issue.

Toys: Mini Superhero Figures Of Spiderman, The Hulk, Wolverine & Captain America

Spiderman & Hulk wooden action figure

These kid-proportioned, wooden action figures of Spiderman & The Hulk are just plain awesome. And the Captain America & Wolverine set is pretty cool as well. I’m a Spidey guy, so I might be biased here.

Made by Learning Curve under the Playtown brand. Get Spidey & Hulk, or Capt. America & Wolverine at Amazon now!

Alphabits: Cool Cartoon Alphabet Woodcarvings

A is for Afro: Cartoon Woodcarved Alphabet series

Just stumbled across this awesome Flickr set of cartoon woodcarved panels by ojimbo. Each letter of the alphabet (sadly, only up to N right now) has it’s own panel with excellent juxtapositions of objects that begin with each letter. I totally want these as trading cards. Pictured is A is for Afro.

The best pieces have combos and triple combos, like the “Masked Mermaid with Mohawk” in the letter M.

Be sure to check out the entire set!

Cool Reconfigured Plastic Toy Art

Plastic toy art insect bug sculptureCool plastic toy art made from recombined plastic toys by artist Sang Won Sung, a Korean artist living in Brazil. The website is in Flash, and there’s not much info, mostly just images in the Portfolio section. The bugs are especially cool, and there are some other toy designs of funky cartoon type characters (including some superheroes) as well.

Enjoy!
