Color Blindness Software Tools for Artists

Color blindness screenshotJust stumbled across these handy Mac OS X software applications to help designers and artists simulate the effects of color blindness on-screen: Sim Daltonism and Color Oracle.

Sim Daltonism works as a floating palette which converts an area under your mouse cursor to the selected type of color blindness — it works similar to the Apple Digital Color Meter sampling utility. There are 8 different types of color blindness to test. Color Oracle works as a menubar item which converts the entire monitor to the selected mode of color blindness, but only offers the three most common forms.

Podcast review: The Illustrative Designer

Illustrative Designer podcast artworkIllustrator extraordinaire Von Glitschka has a very cool podcast out that I just started listening to, The Illustrative Designer podcast. Each podcast is basically an interview by “the Vonster” (as he calls himself) with a chosen professional illustrator, cartoonist or designer. The most recent illustrator interview was with (the unimaginably prolific) cartoon illustrator & designer Bob Staake.

The “illustrative designer” moniker comes from Von’s idea that when asked to describe his work, he says he’s not a graphic designer that can draw, but rather an illustrator who can design. Hence, “illustrative designer”.

Inkspot: Free PDF Magazine Downloads from the Australian Cartoonists’ Association

Inkspot cartoonist magazine cover artI just discovered these free PDF downloads of Inkspot, the Australian Cartoonists’ Association’s official magazine. The current issue feature über-caricaturist Mort Drucker. The publication is about 24 pages and contain interviews and news. I haven’t delved into the complete issue just yet, but looks to be a great resource.

Lots of interviews with cartoonists and other informative cartooning and cartoon industry resources in each issue.

Productivity Tip: Floating, Transparent Reference Images Using Screenshots & Free Software Afloat

Afloat transparent window software for Mac OS X - screenshotEver need to temporarily reference another document while working on something - this may be an image, or instructions, or a PDF file. Many times you want it floating right on top of your current document so you can refer to it while you are working, and not have to switch back and forth between applications.

I do this a lot when working in Illustrator, especially working from reference images, but also the occasional email message or PDF file sent by a client.

Genopal Color Scheme Generator Software: Weird Name, Cool Tool

Genopal color scheme generator software: sample color scheme

Genopal is a color scheme generator software application I just stumbled across, and it’s pretty interesting.

Instead of the standard color wheels most color scheme generator/explorer software programs utilize, Genopal doesn’t give you the option of choosing a color model such as Complimentary, Triadic and such. Instead there are two sliders, one for Color Diversity and one for Lightness Diversity. There’s a “Generate” button which them cycles though color schemes as analagous or as wild as you set the sliders.

Paintbrush: Free Bitmap Image Editor For Mac OS X

Paintbrush bitmap image editor for Mac OS X screenshotPaintbrush a cool little free image editor/paint software program for Mac OS X. As the site says, this is no Photoshop competitor. It’s just your basic paint program like Microsoft Paint or the old MacPaint. It has just the basics - pencil, paintbrush, line, rectangle & circle tools, eraser, text etc. Even lets you open up an image and draw on top of it.

Still, it’s a solid application and thought out. Opens quick, runs smoothly, some cool little animations for windows and tools. Definitely designed with fun in mind.

Free Vector Logo & Brand Art - Brands Of The World

Miller High Life Girl in the Moon vector art illustration screenshot with vector paths highlightedI don’t know how legal all of this is, but since we’re talking cartooning here and we’d only be using these under the fair-use parody provisions in copyright law…

Brands of the World has free vector art downloads of just about every single product, brand or company logo you can think of. I checked out the logo of the Miller High Life Girl in the Moon, and the vector art is pretty good. It looks like there may have been some Illustrator Auto-Trace going on, but the quality is decent.

Free Pop-Culture Typefaces/Fonts For Famous Companies, Logos, Movies, Bands, Brands & More

FamousFonts.com screenshot(via Gilbert Consulting Design Tips): Ever need to find a font that looks just like some famous brand, company or product?

Here are some resources for finding typefaces/fonts for all sorts of brands, famous foods, drinks, candy, restaurants, businesses/companies, bands/musicians, TV shows, sports teams, cars/automobiles, games & video games, publications, sports teams and more:

FamousFonts

Sharkshock Fonts

TypoWiki

Some fonts on FamousFonts are only for ID, but they do tell you the name of the typeface and the foundry (with links where available). Sharkshock seems to offer downloads of everything they show on the site. TypoWiki is more corporate-oriented, the other two more pop-culture related. Also, TypoWiki is (as the name implies) more of a Wikipedia-based reference guide than a download site.

Good stuff, and these things come in handy, usually for some sort of gag or parody - but worth it!
