I just finished up a t-shirt illustration – ‘The Hairy Canary‘ – for mail-order/catalog company What On Earth for their pub t-shirts line.
The basic premise of the t-shirt designs are as follows: the artist is given a choice of bar/pub names to choose from, and from there a design is worked up to go with the name. I believe all the bars & pubs are actual places, but these aren’t officially sanctioned or anything.
From the list I was given, the name ‘Hairy Canary’ just jumped out at me and I knew it was a theme that would spark a cool illustration.

A completely fun, pointless and very Zen website I just stumbled across: Sketch Swap. The premise is simple — make a doodle, submit it, and get a random doodle in return. There’s no eraser, only one pencil size and no color. You can’t save, link to or find your doodle once you submit it. You can’t sign up, log in, create an account, comment or vote.
In short, it’s perfect.

You’d probably think I was crazy if I told you this image contained the New York City skyline, but it does. You have to be a bit of a Photoshop geek to see it, but it’s there.
Head on over to Ironic Sans to see the skyline, and how it was done. It took me a couple of reads to wrap my head around this. I love this kind of stuff!

I have recently become an invited artist over the community illustration blog Sugar Frosted Goodness. If you aren’t familiar with the site, it’s a great community site for illustrators where not only do members post artwork, but also a weekly theme is put together where the contributing artists all submit their interpretation. Similar to the Illustration Friday concept as well as other community artist sites who maintain similar events.
There is lots of great artwork over at SFG, be sure to check it out. It’s a great site to see regular work as well as find some inspiration and creative community.

Who didn’t love the General Mills Monster Cereals growing up — Count Chocula, FrankenBerry and my favorite, Boo Berry.
I just stumbled across these excellent Kubrick figurines of all the main monsters.
Doing a bit of research, it turns out there were two more later additions to the lineup. Do you know them? First was the Wolfman-themed Fruit Brute, which was re-issued as Yummy Mummy. I guess neither did very well on the grocery store shelves.
I was totally hooked on these as a kid, being a huge monster fan. Have not eaten them for many years as I really don’t eat sugar-coated cereal much anymore.
And just as cool as the figurines are the excellent mini cereal box blister packs.

Just posted this funky cartoon skull illustration to my iStockPhoto illustrator account. I was trying to get a good chunk of Halloween imagery uploaded for the upcoming holiday, but with other work projects I just have not had the time to get much done, and it’s getting pretty close to printing deadlines for October/Halloween this year.
Regardless, I have always loved drawing skeletons, and anything Halloween related - monsters, zombies, The Mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula - you name it.

I just posted this SCUBA dive flag t-shirt design up on Zazzle. I was going through some of my archives and had forgotten about this one. I came up with this after taking a camping trip to the Florida Keys (the Bahia Honda Key in particular) a few years ago.
The campsites are right on the beach (with electricity even!), and it’s one of the few areas in the world where snorkeling can be done right from the shore. The entire group brought snorkeling gear “just in case”, but we all found ourselves instant snorkeling enthusiasts from day one. From the outside, it seems kinda boring. When you are actually doing it, it’s inexplicably awesome. Since the creative gears are always crankin’, I ended up working up some sketches for t-shirt ideas and when this one popped up, I knew I had a winner. And then I promptly filed it away and lost track of it for three years!

These kid-proportioned, wooden action figures of Spiderman & The Hulk are just plain awesome. And the Captain America & Wolverine set is pretty cool as well. I’m a Spidey guy, so I might be biased here.
Made by Learning Curve under the Playtown brand. Get Spidey & Hulk, or Capt. America & Wolverine at Amazon now!
