Ever wonder if there’s a word for that cartoon symbol expletive using the ampersand, pound sign (or octothorpe), dollar sign, percent sign, ‘at’ sign and exclamation mark? You see it all the time in printed comic books and cartoon strips.
Seems there is. Over at Typography.com, there’s an entry which discusses this unique cartoon curse “word”, claiming it to be called a ‘grawlix‘.

Über long-time contributing artist most famously known for his “fold-ins” on the back cover of each issue of MAD, Al Jaffee has a feature article over at the New York Times, along with a special feature on the “fold-ins” themselves.
The fold-in started life as a parody on Playboy’s centerfold fold-outs. Jaffee pitched it to MAD, expecting the worst. I can’t even imagine MAD Magazine without them.

I (very) recently worked on a two-page spread illustration for the Cleveland Free Times issue that comes out this week (Wed. Aug. 15, 2007). The piece was a satire on the controversial Cleveland Clinic “Medical Mart” being proposed in Cleveland, Ohio.
Writer James Renner found my work via my website and wanted me to illustrate his Star Wars themed parody of the shenanigans. The piece was done in a cartoon style (obviously) reminiscent of MAD Magazine, as I was flexing some serious Mort Drucker, Sam Viviano & Jack Davis idolisation while creating the piece.
Staff writer Renner, along with Editor Frank Lewis were extremely pleased with the final piece, which was created on a super-tight deadline (even after being given a requested week’s bump by Art Director Ron Kretsch due to many existing and pressing projects on my end).

“Tyrannosaurus Wrecks” cartoon dinosaur t-shirt now available over at my Zazzle store.
I hope I don;t have to explain this one, but for those cavemen out there, the caption “Tyrannosaurus Wrecks” is a pun playing on the name “Tyrannosaurus Rex”. Get it?
Head on over to Zazzle and grab one now, and take a look at the other shirts I have for sale. More coming soon as well!

Hot-rod scooter cartoon mascot character.
Steve over at The Scooter Scoop commissioned me a few months back to create an original Odd Rods inspired cartoon illustration for his blog. He’s posted a kudo-laden entry about the Odd Rods style scooter monster hot rod cartoon art I did for him, and I appreciate it very much. Just wanted to return the favor and give Steve and The Scooter Scoop a little press. The “Mod Rod” cartoon art is available at Café Press as well.
Thanks Steve!
