Genopal is a color scheme generator software application I just stumbled across, and it’s pretty interesting.
Instead of the standard color wheels most color scheme generator/explorer software programs utilize, Genopal doesn’t give you the option of choosing a color model such as Complimentary, Triadic and such. Instead there are two sliders, one for Color Diversity and one for Lightness Diversity. There’s a “Generate” button which them cycles though color schemes as analagous or as wild as you set the sliders.

Primary, secondary, tertiary, complimentary, analagous, brightness, hue, value, saturation, tints, shades… do these words mean anything to you? They should.
A post by cartoonist Matt Glover points out ColorFAQ – very basic web guide to color theory. It got me poking around on the internet for some other sites with some more depth on the subject. Sometimes I forget how much I use color theory every single day, it’s just something that sometimes goes on autopilot and is an easy topic to forget to recommend to others.

This one is hard to explain without watching the YouTube video over at Creative Bits: Content Aware Image Resizing
The video is a demonstration/presentation from the annual SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques) Conference. In short, the video demonstrates computer algorithms which allow an image to be resized horizontally or vertically non-proportionally, without distorting the image. Elements are “reshuffled” inside the image to keep the same basic look of the visual information.
Very interesting.

Paintbrush a cool little free image editor/paint software program for Mac OS X. As the site says, this is no Photoshop competitor. It’s just your basic paint program like Microsoft Paint or the old MacPaint. It has just the basics – pencil, paintbrush, line, rectangle & circle tools, eraser, text etc. Even lets you open up an image and draw on top of it.
Still, it’s a solid application and thought out. Opens quick, runs smoothly, some cool little animations for windows and tools. Definitely designed with fun in mind.

I don’t know how legal all of this is, but since we’re talking cartooning here and we’d only be using these under the fair-use parody provisions in copyright law…
Brands of the World has free vector art downloads of just about every single product, brand or company logo you can think of. I checked out the logo of the Miller High Life Girl in the Moon, and the vector art is pretty good. It looks like there may have been some Illustrator Auto-Trace going on, but the quality is decent.

Who knew that Ohio State University has a Cartoon Research Library? Who knew anybody had a Cartoon Research Library?
A quick search to test the database, I searched for “Mort Drucker, magazine cartoon, MAD Magazine” (by selecting from the pre-existing categories in the search fields). Turns out you only get a textual search result, much like an old-school computer card catalog in a library.
They also sponsor an annual Festival of Cartoon Art, which this year is held October 26-27, 2007.

(via Gilbert Consulting Design Tips): Ever need to find a font that looks just like some famous brand, company or product?
Here are some resources for finding typefaces/fonts for all sorts of brands, famous foods, drinks, candy, restaurants, businesses/companies, bands/musicians, TV shows, sports teams, cars/automobiles, games & video games, publications, sports teams and more:
FamousFonts
Sharkshock Fonts
TypoWiki
Some fonts on FamousFonts are only for ID, but they do tell you the name of the typeface and the foundry (with links where available). Sharkshock seems to offer downloads of everything they show on the site. TypoWiki is more corporate-oriented, the other two more pop-culture related. Also, TypoWiki is (as the name implies) more of a Wikipedia-based reference guide than a download site.
Good stuff, and these things come in handy, usually for some sort of gag or parody – but worth it!

Hot-rod scooter cartoon mascot character.
Steve over at The Scooter Scoop commissioned me a few months back to create an original Odd Rods inspired cartoon illustration for his blog. He’s posted a kudo-laden entry about the Odd Rods style scooter monster hot rod cartoon art I did for him, and I appreciate it very much. Just wanted to return the favor and give Steve and The Scooter Scoop a little press. The “Mod Rod” cartoon art is available at Café Press as well.
Thanks Steve!
