I was contacted in late 2006 to redesign the Official Odd Rods website [odd-rods.com]. The Odd Rods, if you aren't familiar with them, are hilarious cartoon monsters/creatures in exaggerated and ridiculous hot rod vehicles. They hit the scene in the late 60's/early 70's as a trading card & stickers set, and proved so popular that they went on to create 6 more trading card & sticker sets. The concept was losely based on the hot rod monster art by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth of Ratfink & Mr. Gasser fame. The Odd Rods featured a more whimsical approach to the vehicles, using ice cream trucks, garbage cans and other equally ridiculous "vehicles", all hot rodded out. Anyways, the rights to the Odd Rods – which had up until recently languished in memory lane – were picked up by a husband and wife team who also got in touch with and signed up original Odd Rods artist Bob "B.K." Taylor to work with them on the relaunch. Winter of 2006 I worked with B.K. and the owners to develop this new website, which needed to embody the attitude of the Odd Rods - fun, irreverent, and of course cartoony. I developed the design of the site, as well as created original header art illustrations for each section. The web header was created in Flash with a fun cartoon bounce to the logo, and hot rod car sounds added to the mouse overs on the main section buttons. All in all, a great project and a very cool client & product to work with. The Odd Rods were one of the key inspirations when I was a kid to become a cartoonist, and I just can't explain how cool it is to be working to help bring these crazy creatures in vehicles back into the popular culture. |
