This cartoon bear illustration was developed for a client's youth financial education program. A fun, accessible character for the company's publications was desired to give a fun face to the money-management system. The bear, if not obvious, was in reference to the "bull" & "bear" markets in the stock exchange business. The bull character represents the optimistic, money-making side of the stock market, while the bear represents the pessimistic, loss side.Obviously we wanted the bear to be bumbling, confused and poor in appearance. The program is not specifically focused on stocks or investing, but ti was felt these characters would best represent the concepts. The bear was developed after the bull character, and the two were designed to work in tandem, each contrasting the other. Having the bull for a reference for the style and direction were were going with the look of the characters made sketching up the bear an easier task. Once the final sketch was approved by the client, it was scanned into Photoshop and the vector art was created by hand in Adobe Illustrator. In addition to the bear character, a companion bull cartoon character illustration was also created, as well as additional poses and also a "group shot", empasizing the difference between the two characters to emphasize the financial results they represent. |
