This cartoon bull illustration was developed for a client's youth financial education program. A fun, accessible character for the company's publications was desired to give a fun face to the money-management system. The bull, if not obvious, was in reference to the "bull" & "bear" markets in the stock exchange business. The bull character represents the optimistic, money-making side of the stock market, while the bear represents the pessimistic, loss side.Obviously we wanted the bull to be strong, confident and successful. The program is not specifically focused on stocks or investing, but ti was felt these characters would best represent the concepts. An initial series of sketches were developed for the bull, including one on all fours, hooves and all. I was';t sure if I anted to keep the bull animal-like or keep him human in appearance. In the end we decided on the human style, as it gave us more flexibility to have him doing business-/money-related activities in future variations of the mascot character. Once the final sketch was approved by the client, it was scanned into Photoshop and the vector art was created by hand in Adobe Illustrator. In addition to the bull character, a companion bear cartoon character illustration was also created, as well as additional poses and also a "group shot", empasizing the difference between the two characters to emphasize the financial results they represent. |
